Summer Learning Journey | Reflection

Today I have done another activity which is a reflection of the Summer Learning Journey, and I have created a slide to show my answers to the questions about the SLJ activities.

To all the commenters, and the people who made the activities, thank you for taking your time off summer with your whanau and friends to comment to peoples blogs who participated and also creating great activities for all of us to enjoy doing during the summer break, and I truly enjoyed doing the activities that I have done.

Hope everyone enjoys their summer holiday before school starts and other things!

Summer Learning Journey | Snowball Poem

Today I have done another activity called snowball poem. A snowball poem is a poem where each line is one word longer than the previous one, or another type of snowball poem,  where each line is one letter longer than the previous one. In this activity I needed to write a snowball poem about summer, and I wrote about the beach during the summer season. After that I recorded myself saying my own snowball poem using screencastify, and blogged it. Would you try writing a snowball poem about summer?

I enjoyed doing this activity because I have learnt how to write one and the process of how to do it.

Summer Learning Journey | Make Your Own Game

Today I have done another activity called make your own game. In this activity I made my own animal puzzle, which is a game where you need to put the popsicle sticks together to form the particular image created, and the game was based on an animal. While doing this activity I needed to use popsicle sticks but instead I used a cupboard since I didn't have any to use, which you can also use if you don't have enough, too.

- To make your own animal puzzle, you can use cupboard, or popsicle sticks. If you are using a cupboard , draw an animal that you want to draw, and colour it in after you finish your drawing, as well as adding some background images to fill up the blanks. Lastly, cut up the cupboard and into rectangles and challenge your friends and family to solve the puzzle by timing them using mobile phones or stopwatch.

- If you are using popsicle sticks you can tape the back of it, to hold it in place. Then draw your animal and other images if you want, then take the tape out, and lastly test your friends and family out.

After I created this I timed myself, and it took me 12 seconds to finish my puzzle, and I also tested on my mum which took her 34 seconds. I really enjoyed doing activities because it was always my favourite thing when I was younger to make puzzles, and I still liked making my own puzzles.

Summer Learning Journey | Hidden Colours in Ink

Today I have done another activity called hidden colours in ink. In this activity I needed to find which colours appeared on the ink on the paper towel was dipped into salt water. When I looked at the result on the paper towel it was really cool since I never really thought about what colours might appear when you dip it into a salt water, and the results also looked very cool.

I have also created a slide showing the steps on how to find hidden colours in the ink since this activity was really fun to do. I really enjoyed doing this activity because it was really entertaining seeing the colours change as the paper towel soaks up the water.

Summer Learning Journey | My Town

Today I have done another activity called my town, and in this activity I watched a video about the different types of lines, then looked at a diagram, to help me find the different types of lines around my house which were parallel lines, perpendicular lines, intersecting lines, segment lines, a line, and ray lines. Then using the diagram I looked around my home to find the items that had the same lines from the diagram. After spotting them I made a new google drawing and added pictures and drew the things and also added names for each item. I enjoyed doing this activity because I was able to recall the different lines and find the items that had the lines.

Summer Learning Journey ~ Kowhaiwhai

Today I have done another activity called kowhaiwhai. In this activity I made my koru design by using the curve tool in google drawing, and I drew koru hearts because the design is one of my favourite drawing. After drawing I coloured half of the koru's red, orange, and yellow, the reason why I chose these colours was because its the colours of summer. When I drew the hearts I changed the set up of the design so that it looked like a kowhaiwhai.

I really enjoyed doing this activity because I was able to make my own design, and it was really fun learning how to make one.

Summer Learning Journey ~ Ice Art

Today I have done another activity called ice art. In this activity I needed to collect leaves, flowers, twigs and feathers, and put them in a container with water that would be suitable to freeze. For my ice art I have put flowers from my back yard and put it inside my little container. After I set it overnight I took it out of the container and took a photo of it quickly before it melted completely. When I looked at the task, there was a tip saying that if I added boiling water, then cooled it down it would make the ice super clear, but I think I set the water for too long and it formed air bubbles inside the ice.

To make your own ice art you can find any container that will fit your freezer, then collect items like flowers, twigs, leaves, and feathers then place them inside the container, then let your boiling water set for a while and pour it inside the container, then carefully put it side your freezer overnight for the best result, (OPTIONAL: you can also put a lid if there is, or even plastic wrap if there is no lid to the container).

I enjoyed doing this activity because the ending result was really cool and I think I would make another one but in a bigger container next time and put some more things inside it.

Summer Learning Journey | Zhuzhing it up!

Today I have done another activity called zhuzhing it up. In this activity I needed to read a story called "Nobody Laughed." Nobody Laughed story is about how everyone had the same bag since they all bought it from the Bigbarn store, and since all the bags were the same with no name to be recognized it all got mixed up. Then the teacher started to open up all the bags since no one could identify their bags and everyones bag revealed their secret favourite thing, and each time the teacher opened the bag nobody laughed.

During this activity I copied a google drawing to write my answers of why everyone had the same bag, did the teacher do the right thing by opening up all the bags, and is it ok to have the things the same as others or should everyone have things that are different. After writing the answers to those questions I write what might have been in Aiden's bag. Then I made another google drawing and made a digital creation by designing my own t-shirt that is uniquely mine, and the topic of my design was based on summer.

I enjoyed doing this activity because I really liked the story as well as writing about what might be inside Aiden's bag because it can be something unexpected.

Summer Learning Journey | Nanogirl | Make a Musical Insturment

Today I have done another activity called make a musical instrument. A sound is created by making a vibration that travels the air molecules in our ears so that we can hear it. For this activity I had a choice of making a xylophone, guitar, or a harmonica, and I chose to make a xylophone. When I created my xylophone the smaller bars made higher sounds and the larger bars made lower sounds. I really enjoyed doing this activity because I was able to make an instrument using paper and tape, and testing it out to see if it works.

Summer Learning Journey | Silly Algebra

Today I have done another activity called silly algebra. In this activity I needed to make my own algebra problem using google draw by looking at an example that was shown to make my own problem. For me to do this activity I put an image and beside it I wrote what the number of the image equaled to. Then I made my own algebra problem and solved it to find out the answers for the three questions. I enjoyed doing this activity because I was able to practice my maths skills as well as creating my own algebra problem.

Challenge:
Solve the three problems on paper or something using your maths knowledge on multiplication, addition, and subtraction. Then when you find the answer, write it on the comment, and write how you solved the problem, good luck!

Summer Learning Journey | Snoozatron

Today I have done another activity called snoozatron. In this activity I have created an animation about a machine that would wake me up every morning. To do this activity I watched a snoozatron video of Wallace & Gromit's video. The reason why I chose a machine to wake me up was because I sometimes be lazy to get up since I watch movies, and play with lego. What machine would you make that would make to help you fall asleep, wake up or other problems? I enjoyed doing this activity because its was really fun making a machine that would wake me up.

Summer Learning Journey | Nanogirl | Find Your Fingerprint

Today I have done another activity called find your fingerprint. Everyone has a different fingerprint even if you have an identical twin, and there are three main types of fingerprints and they are loop, whorl, and arch. In this activity I have created a fingerprint viewer using tape, and paper. To make my fingerprint more visible I used some black ink and when I looked at my fingerprint it was a double loop, but when I tested on my other fingers it was a whorl.

I enjoyed doing this activity because it was really fun seeing what my fingerprint looks like and what type my fingerprints were.

Summer Learning Journey | Cicadas in Art

Today I have done another activity called cicadas in art. In this activity I needed to collect cicada skins around my garden but I couldn't find any so I did another task by trying to draw a cicada with the help of a site that shows how to draw a cicada in different angles from the top and from the side.

But before I did this I learnt what cicada exoskeletons are, for people that don't know this it is an outer layer that covers an animal, like the skin of a cicada when they shed when they are an adult. Then I watched an adult cicada emerging from the skin by a timelapse, and it looked really cool since I have never seen a cicada shed its skin.

I really enjoyed doing this activity because I was able to learn what a cicada exoskeleton is and learn to draw one.

Summer Learning Journey | Clerihew Poem

Today I have done another activity called a Clerihew poem. This poem was invented by Edward Clerihew Bentley, it is a short biographical poem about famous person or a characters from books. In a clerihew there are 4 lines, and in those 4 lines the first two and the other 2 lines needs to end with something that rhymes. For my character I chose Belle because I thought I could write a good clerihew out of that princess. I enjoyed doing this activity because I learned how to write a clerihew and what kind of poem it was.

Summer Learning Journey | Geometric animal art

Today I have done another activity called geometric animal art. In this activity I needed to make a new google drawing and use the polyline tool on google drawing. Then choosing an animal that I wanted which was a bee, and draw the outline, then using the polyline tool again to do the inside of the animal. The reason why I chose the bee was because I always see them outside when I am running or going somewhere. I enjoyed doing this activity because it was really fun creating a digital geometric animal, and using polyline to do the inside of the animal.

Summer Learning Journey ~ He Hokonga - Ngā Ōrau (Sales - Percentages)

Today I have done another activity called sales and percentages. In this activity I have created an advertisement on an item that I liked and put the lip sets on sale. Then I calculated how much the set would be when it was 30% from the original slide, and got the answer of 18. The way I got 18 was dividing 60 by 10 which was 6, then multiplying that by 3 since I needed to find out how much 30% was.

I enjoyed doing this activity because I really like making advertisements since I can be creative and do whatever I want.

Summer Learning Journey ~ My Summer Collage

Today I have done another activity called my summer collage. In this activity I needed to learn how to make a collage using the images fro Google Drawing, and see an example of one of the summer collages. Then I made a copy of the drawing the template and created my own one. In the drawing I put ice cream, beach, watermelon, ice water, sunglass, air conditioner, hat, ganddles, sun screen, and tennis. To create your own summer collage you can put any images like food, things that you like to do and other things that relate to summer.

I found this activity fun because when I created my summer collage it allowed me to share my what I like to eat, what sports I play, and other summer things.

Summer Learning Journey ~ Build a Boat

Today I have done another activity called build a boat. In this activity I needed to build my own boat using recycled materials. To create my own one I used a plastic container, paper, and a colouring marker. After creating it I put some water in my sink to test out my boat if it will float or sink, and it floated.

To create your own boat you can look around your house and search for items that you think you can make into a boat, and construct it. Then you can put some water in your sink and test if your boat sink or float.

I enjoyed doing this activity because it was fun searching for materials in my house that I can reuse to make my boat.

Summer Learning Journey | Sun, Wind & Rain?

Today I have done another activity called sun, wind & rain. In this activity I needed to read the story of how people used to work out the weather in the past. Then I watched a video on how to create my own weather journal at home. After doing that I created one on google slides and recorded it three times in the day, by looking at the temperature, the clothing that I'm wearing for that time and how the sky looks.

To create your own weather journal you can do it digitally or on paper, then record the weather three times in the day and write down the temperature, clothings that you are wearing, and how the sky looks.

I enjoyed doing this activity because it was fun observing how weather  changes rapidly over time even in a few minutes or hours.

Summer Learning Journey | One is a snail ten is a crab

Today I have done another activity called one is a snail ten is a crab. In this activity I needed to watch and listen to a story and draw a crab, ant, dog, spider, a snail, and a boy and a girl. After drawing each of them on paper I needed to add up the legs that will give me the answer of 33. For me to get 33 I added all the animals, and peoples legs to get the total of 33.

I enjoyed doing this activity because I really liked drawing the animals as well as the boy and the girl.

Summer Learning Journey | Magnetic Poetry

Today I have done another activity called magnetic poem. A magnetic poem is a type of poetry that was invented by Dave Capell who could not think of what to write for a song, so he put down interesting words on paper and rearranged them to make a song, which was really good fun so he decided to make magnetic poetry to share with other people.

For this activity my topic about summer was the beach, the reason why I chose this topic was because there were many words that were on the sides of the google drawing that I could write about the beach.

I enjoyed doing this activity because I was able to write my own magnetic poem.

Summer Learning Journey | Point Perspective Art

Today I have done another activity called point perspective art. A point perspective art is a drawing method that makes objects smaller as it gets further away. In this activity I have created my point perspective with a hexagon, start, triangle, circle, rectangle, and wrote each letters of my name. When I finished drawing the shapes, I started to colour in the middle dark and when light when it started to go out. Lastly I outline the parts with a black colouring pencil to make the art stand out more. I enjoyed doing this activity because I really like making point perspective art.

Summer Learning Journey | Nanogirl | Optical Illusion

Today I have done another activity called make an optical illusion. Optical means to do with our eyes, and when both words are put together it means where our eyes see something that isn't really there. In this activity I have created an impossible cube because this was one of the optical illusions that I really liked. I enjoyed doing this activity because it was really interesting looking at various types of illusions from the images.

Summer Learning Journey | Bridge Builder

Today I have done another activity called bridge builder. Before doing the activity I learned the different shapes that are used to build bridges. In this activity I needed to make a 30 cm bridge depending on what activity I was doing, testing it out, then fixing the parts that needed to be strong or needed to be secured. When I started to do this activity I tried to stick the cardboard on the chairs with tape but it didn't stick so I used 2 bucks that were filled with heavy items. I enjoyed doing this activity because it allowed me to design my own bridge and fix it to make it better.

Summer Learning Journey | Celebrating New Years

Today I have done another activity called celebrating new years. In this activity I looked at the slides to learn how to make my backgrounds transparent, and looked at an example of a creation. After I did that I took a photo of myself using my chromebook, and used remove.bg to remove my background, opened up a new good drawing and found a new years image to use as my background. Then resized the background to fit in the drawing and inserted myself on top of the background. I enjoyed doing this activity because I was able to learn how to remove my background using the website recommended to me.

Summer Learning Journey ~ He nuka pāngarau

Today I have done another activity called he nuka pāngarau. In this activity I used my multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction skills, to get the final answers for each three slides. This activity was in Maori so I translated it to english using a translator. After I finished the slides I tried it on Te Raumati, and she was interested in learning the method of doing this. I really enjoyed doing this activity because I like learning new magic skills to try on my whanau and friends.

Summer Learning Journey ~ Build Something that Flies

Today I have done another activity called build something that flies. In this activity I needed to create three flying objects which are a ring glider, a hoop glider, and a paper aeroplane.

A ring glider is an object that has one small ring and a one bigger ring that is taped onto a rolled up paper that looks like a straw. Next is a hoop glider, it is paper that is folded and made into a circle shape by bringing the two ends of the paper onto the sides to make a hoop. Lastly it is a paper aeroplane which is an object that has a point in the front of the plane and the back with wind wings, and under is the place where people hold it to throw.

When I was throwing the three flying objects I discovered that the paper aeroplane was the only one that flew the longest, and I think it's like this because the aeroplane has a point in the front that makes it glide through the air. Something I enjoyed when I did this activity was testing all of the inventions out since I wanted to find out how far each of the objects goes. One thing I found tricky was rolling the paper into a straw to make the ring glider because the length of the paper was pretty short, and I needed to use a pencil to roll it nicely without any folds. Some helpful tips when making the flying objects are to make sure that you measure out the paper accurately, make sure you have all the materials you are going to use before making it, and finally take your time when making each of the items.

Summer Learning Journey | Origami Box

Today I have done another activity called origami box. If you don’t know what an origami means, it is defined as ori meaning folding, and kami meaning paper. It is a Japanese art folding paper used to make decorations using a square or a paper that has the same distance on both four sides, and it is used to make cranes, planes, creatures and other models.

To create the box I watched a video showing how to make one using 6 origami papers, and repeated the same process 5 more times after I created my first one. While making it the shapes and fractions I saw were triangles, rectangles, squares, and a cube. When I did this activity I didn’t really find it hard since it was repeating, and putting it together.

Some tips for creating your own origami box are to make sure you have 6 of the same papers (but colours can be any), make sure you press on the folds firmly so that it leaves a mark on the paper, and lastly try to align the papers when folding perfectly.
